Hello to all seeing this post! My name is Joshua Rivera, I am 18 years old and current a freshmen at the College of Southern Nevada. I am a first-generation college student as well as a second-generation Latin American, more specifically Salvadoran American. My biggest interests include musica and cars. I currently own a 2001 Pontiac Firebird, and I am hoping to save up for a classic car to turn into a Lowrider, something I've dreamed of doing ever since I was a kid. In terms of music, I mainly listen to Hip Hop, R&B, Oldies, Soul, and various Latin genres. My top 5 includes Kendrick Lamar, Daniel Cesar, 2Pac, Joey Bada$$, and Mac Miller. I am very introverted, unless I know you, I will be extremely quiet. But get to know me and I can be a fun dude to kick it with.
When I arrived at the first class of the semester, I immediately knew this would be a good class. I will be completely transparent, when I heard that from now on class will start at 7am, I was about ready to drop the course, but I decided to stay, as I thought it would be a nice way to discipline myself and get rid of my procrastination issue. So far, the class is going over many things I already know, but I can tell I will learn a lot more about computer literacy that I never even knew was a thing,
2.2.3 I have used many different types of operating systems in my lifetime. I've went from Apple OS, to Chrome OS, to Android, to IOS, and Windows. Each and everyone I've listed, I have a pretty good understanding of. I've used these skills to become versatile in whatever workplace or school I go to. With each system, I've mostly used trial and error to learn the ropes, and then look up YouTube tutorials for more complex or niche parts of the OS.
First-generation college student and second-generation Latin American, excellent :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for your immediate observation that IS101-3205, Spring 2025 would a good class and your transparency on your reaction to 7 am. The best points are your choice to use this as an opportunity to discipline yourself and your attitude of focusing on what you will learn instead of what you already know!
Check out Linux and UNIX, Joshua.
May you journey from first-generation college student to first-generation college degree holder and through your academic journey become more extravert so it's easier for people to know and appreciate you ^_^
Hey Joshua! That’s awesome that you’re a first-gen college student, major respect for paving your own path! Your love for cars and music is really cool, and that dream of building a Lowrider sounds sick. I totally get the struggle of those early 7 AM classes, but it’s great that you’re using it as a way to build discipline. Your experience with different operating systems is impressive, being adaptable with tech is such a valuable skill. Looking forward to learning alongside you this semester! ^-^
ReplyDeleteHello Joshua! I'm a first-generation Mexican here and first-generation going to college. So, I somewhat have an understanding of having to succeed in my family's eyes and now my children's eyes as well. You and I have the same defense mechanism when it comes to people. I don't like to get close to people unless I can read their vibe and the way they portray themselves. If all turns our gucci, then it's a vibe. When it comes to waking up early on the weekday, that's no problem for me since I have to wake up at 4:30 a.m. or 5 a.m. depending on how far I have to work that day because I need to arrive at 6 a.m. sharp, but on the weekends that's a whole different story it cost me a lot to get up at 6 a.m. just to get here at 7 a.m. with a cup of coffee or tea in my hand. It's good to have a great understanding of multiple operating systems. I also learned from trial and error, and YouTube is my best friend. That's where I learned to put my pc together and where I watch videos to work on all 3 of my cars.
ReplyDeleteHi Joshua! I am also aspiring to be a first generation college graduate! Your music taste is very similar to mine and I am very familiar with your top 5. I also used various operating systems and while I have a decent understanding of them, this course has taught me that there is way more that I have yet to discover! Good luck on your journey to being a first generation college graduate!
ReplyDeleteHey there Joshua! That’s a great classic car you have, and I’d love to see how you customize it if you’re willing to share some pictures of it in future blog posts! I can relate to being introverted. I’m the same way of being pretty quiet unless I’m around close friends and family. YouTube is also my go-to resource for tutorials on learning complex features for the operating systems that I work with. Recently, I had to learn about Linux and how to navigate it on my Steam Deck by watching YouTube videos since it was all new to me.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a first-generation college student/graduate. I know it probably means a lot to you being able to say that you are. Firebird?! In my opinion, they do not make cars like they used to. My dream car is a 1968 Chevy Camaro. It is always reassuring to hear that I'm not the only introvert in a class and I'm glad you decided to stick with the class to better yourself. Trial and error are one of the best ways to better yourself. There is no better way to improve than to learn from your mistakes.
ReplyDeleteHello Joshua, I am also a first-generation college student. Cars and music are my biggest interests as well. I have an associate's in automotive from CSN where I turned my passion into a profession. I was lucky enough to go SEMA once where I got to see a bunch of lowriders. That was an awesome experience.
ReplyDeleteI too went to SEMA this year! Wasn't it so cool?
DeleteHey Joshua!
ReplyDeleteA Salvi? Love to hear it! My sister-in-law is a Salvadorian herself, so I love hearing about the country while eating some pupusas or pan con pollo (even if I would rather just call it a torta, LOL!) I read that you like Kendrick Lamar, will you be going to see him in concert in May? I am, and I can't wait to hear "tv off" and "wacced out morals" live!
As a first-generation student myself, I completely understand the experience. However, good for you to decide to stick with the class regardless of the time.
I hope you share your knowledge on MacOS and Windows on your blog, I look forward to reading it!
Hello Joshua!
ReplyDeleteBeing a first-generation college student is such an accomplishment, and it’s inspiring that you’re already taking the initiative to stay disciplined with your studies. Your dream of turning a classic car into a Lowrider sounds amazing! That would definitely be a cool project to work on, especially with your love for cars.
Your experience with different operating systems is really impressive, and it’s awesome that you've figured out how to adapt to each one through trial and error. That’s a great skill to have!
Looking forward to hearing more as you continue your college journey! Keep at it and good luck with your Lowrider dream!
So many 1st generation students in this class! I'm a 1st gen too, and was even the 1st to graduate highschool on this side of the family.
ReplyDeleteHey Joshua! What got you interested in classic cars? I agree that at the very beginning of Labsim I knew most of the materials but as we went on there are definitely new concepts and usage of Word I never once knew about.
ReplyDeleteHey Joshua,
ReplyDeleteIt’s awesome to see your passion for cars and music! Owning a Firebird and dreaming of building a Lowrider is seriously cool—I hope you get the chance to make that dream a reality. Your music taste is solid too; Kendrick, 2Pac, and Mac Miller are legends.
I respect your decision to stick with IS101 despite the early mornings—discipline like that will take you far. Even if some of the material is familiar now, it sounds like you're on track to picking up valuable skills. Your versatility with different operating systems is a huge plus, especially for adapting in work and school environments. Trial and error is a great way to learn, and YouTube tutorials are a lifesaver for the tricky stuff!
Looking forward to hearing more about your journey—keep pushing forward!
Hey Joshua! It’s awesome you’re a first-gen student and have a cool Lowrider dream! Love your music taste too. I’m not a morning person either, but like you, I set a challenge to be there, so I get the struggle. Sounds like you’re already pretty skilled with different operating systems—keep it up!
ReplyDeleteHey Joshua,
ReplyDeleteI also have a love for classic cars, I always said when I get rich I don't care about this new stuff, I just want all the old classic cars from the 50's. I love Mac Miller as well, I use to always come home from high school and go into my room and put on his Watching Movies album every single day. The man's a legend.
Hi Joshua,
ReplyDeleteI have a friend with an older firebird like that and they are very interesting. I love old school Lowriders and would love a project like that as well. They have a big car meet by the IKEA on the first and third Sunday of each month that you might enjoy if you didn't know of it already.
Hi Joshua, judging by your favorite music artist, I can tell that you have a great music taste. I am also an introvert as I like to keep to myself and talk to people I know. Although I don't show up to class at 7, I also considered dropping IS101 the first couple of weeks because it was intimidating at first, but I stuck around because I realized that this class helps me stay on top of my school work. Using different types of system is a valuable skill because it helps to broaden our point of view and also our knowledge on those systems.
ReplyDeleteHi Joshua, oldies are good to listen to with a drink. You will get your dream car, it's possible just start saving and get connected with people that have those type of cars. You mentioned you were introvert but I'm sure you can talk to anyone about your dream car, so that will make it easy for you to get to know them. A class at 7am is wild to me too, but it fit with my schedule and losing some sleep one day a week won’t kill me. Also now that we are this far in the class I have learned so much and the no sleep is paying off.
ReplyDeleteHi Joshua,
ReplyDeleteSalvadoreans make good pupusas. That is cool you are into cars. I also took the class for some discipline. I wish the best of luck to you!
Hi Joshua! I too really like Kendrick and Mac Miller, especially Kendrick. I think his music is super inspiring and really deep. It for sure is all about the storytelling and going deeper, reading between the lines. That to me just means you really are someone who'd kind of like that too, really cool in my opinion!
